KEVIN CUTHBERT believes if Mor-ton get off to a flyer this season they could be challenging at the top of the table.

Ton lost five of their first six league games at the start of the last campaign and ended up battling relegation.

But Cuthbert, pictured, believes a bright start could generate huge momentum around the club, which has been revitalised by new boss Allan Moore's arrival.

"Both seasons I've been here we've struggled to get going in the first nine or 10 games," he said. "The first season (2008-09), we managed to claw it back and eventually finish fourth, but last season we struggled from day one.

"We want to be doing well from the start and, hopefully, get the fans turning out in numbers.

"The manager is trying to convey to us that if we are fit, then we have a better chance of winning the league.

"Anyone can win the league. The usual suspects will be there, but maybe teams like Morton and Queen of the South could push on, too.

"The new signings have gelled well. We have signed a different kind of players to what we have had in the past and I think we are looking a better side."

The 27-year-old endured a nightmare season last year, breaking his foot in pre-season and further aggravating the injury in the warm-up prior to the 5-0 defeat to Partick Thistle at the end of August.

In the end, he managed just five appearances and is glad to have completed pre-season. He said: "I missed the majority of last season so the tough pre-season has been good for me.

"I've not spoken to the manager about the number one position. I am just looking to get in the best possible shape so that I can challenge. I am even doing a bit of work on my own to make sure I'm at the top of my game. It's a big season for me.

"I think we will certainly be a fitter side. The manager likes the players to have a laugh and a joke but when it comes to training, he expects you to work hard."
