ALAN Lithgow will not be signing for Morton after the club ended their interest in the former Clyde player.
The centre-half spent pre-season with the Cappielow club but they have decided not to offer him a contract.
Instead, Ton boss Allan Moore has turned his attentions to securing Stuart McCaffrey, the St Johnstone defender, on a short-term loan deal.
McCaffrey, who previously played for Inverness, missed much of last season through injury and is keen to gain some match sharpness at Cappielow, with a deal possibly being concluded within the next 48 hours.
Ton currently have only Marc Smyth and Stewart Greacen as recognised centre-halves.
On-loan Hamilton defender Grant Evans deputised for the injured Greacen during the extra-time-and-penalties victory over Dumbarton in the first round of the Alba Challenge Cup on Sunday.
But adding more defensive cover remains a priority, with Moore eager to remedy the problems at the back which undermined the team last season.
With a deal for Lithgow now dead, Moore has finished whittling down the extensive list of trialists that joined up during pre-season.
The Ton manager was eager to dwell on the positives of his side having managed to successfully negotiate their first competitive match of the season.
After a goalless 120 minutes on Sunday, Ton managed to overcome Dumbarton 4-3 on penalties, with Graham Holmes, Michael Tidser, David O'Brien and Kevin Kelbie all netting from the spot.
He said: "The boys were always going to take time to find their feet and this was their first competitive match.
"We are still trying to fit the midfield together. For example, Graham Holmes was playing on the right, which is not his natural position, though he is prepared to play there.
"There are definite areas for improvement but they are good boys to work with.
"Against Dumbarton, Stewart Kean was on target with a few chances. The main thing was that we were creating the chances.
"If we keep doing that then we will start to take them.
"But we will certainly accept the clean sheet, as defence is an area we have been trying to work on throughout pre-season."
