HIGHLAND FLING: Graeme Holmes, pictured with ex-Ton no.2 Allan McManus at Dumbarton on Sunday, hopes Morton can copy Caley.
GRAEME Holmes insists Allan Moore's new-look Morton side need to be given time to gel - but pointed to the example of Inverness Caledonian Thistle last season as proof of what can happen when a team clicks.
Ton are desperate for a positive kick-off to the season after false starts in the previous two campaigns.
And while Holmes is desperate to get off to a flyer, he knows if the side are given time to develop as a team then the season could prove a successful one in the long run. He said: "Nobody really talked about Inverness until Christmas, or even just after that.
"They went on an incredible run after that and ended up winning the league. Any team which goes on a good run in the First Division will be there or thereabouts.
"The First Division is a hard league but if you build up some momentum then who knows what can happen?
"It's a completely new team and with every game we play the players will get to know each other a bit more.
"By the time the season starts, hopefully we will be accustomed to each others' play."
Holmes is one of a host of new signings brought in by Moore this summer and the former Dunfermline midfielder has been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the squad.
He said: "The signings that have come in look good. Stewart Kean has played in the SPL and Fouad Bachirou in midfield looks very good. I already knew Marc Smyth from Airdrie.
"But I've been impressed with the players already here. Michael Tidser is a really good player and comfortable on the ball. We are looking not bad but it takes a while for any new team to gel."
Holmes has been playing on the right side of midfield so far this season, following his summer switch from Dunfermline, and is hoping the new role will free him up to get forward more.
He said: "Goalscoring has never been a big part of my game but if I am playing right midfield then I'll be looking to push forward and get some goals.I played right midfield a few times for Dunfermline and before that at Airdrie, so it's a position I know how to play."
