CUP HOPE: Colin Stewart

COLIN Stewart expects a much more open, attacking game against Ross County in the second round of the Alba Challenge Cup tonight than in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Stirling Albion.

The Forthbank side’s defensive approach earned them a point against Ton on the first day of the new season on Saturday.

But the Ton goalkeeper, pictured, believes his former club, who reached the final of the Scottish Cup last season where they lost to Dundee United, will take the game to Ton.

He said: “Stirling worked hard for their point but County will be looking to come out and have a go. It will be a different type of game. Everyone wants to get a run in the cup and this is a good opportunity for us.”

Saturday’s stalemate was in stark contrast to Ton’s 7-1 demolition of Stranraer the previous weekend in the first round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.

Stewart acknowledges it will take time for the team to get to know each other properly, but was happy with the clean sheet against Stirling.

He said: “Our start has been pleasing from a defensive point of view.

“We are certainly not conceding many goals and, as a goalkeeper, I am delighted with that. It’s an aspect we have been working hard on all pre-season.

“We are not the tallest team at the back but it is not all about winning the first header. Competing for the second ball is important and we have been doing that well.

“On the field it will take a bit of time for the players to learn each other’s styles but we are getting there.

“It’s one of the best dressing rooms I’ve ever been in. The boys spend a lot of time in each other’s company and the trip to Newcastle helped everybody get to know each other.”
