GOAL: Ross Kearns tucks away the opener on Wednesday.

GREENOCK can clinch a place in the quarter-finals of the Sectional League Cup tomorrow.

With only the top team from each of the eight sections progressing to the knock-out stage, Greenock need just one point from Saturday’s clash against Renfrew at Ravenscraig to secure their place.

With Port Glasgow, who have a free weekend, doing their Inverclyde neighbours a favour by knocking Johnstone Burgh out of the reckoning by holding them to a draw on Wednesday evening, only Renfrew and Vale of Leven can now catch Greenock.

Even at that, they would each need to win both of their remaining two games and hope to overcome the Ravenscraig men’s superior goal difference.

So Greenock are definitely in pole position, but manager Stevie Mooney will miss tomorrow’s tie due to a pre-arranged commitment to attend a friend’s wedding.

Team matters will be in the hands of Mooney’s trusted assistant, Martin Campbell, but the pair have already discussed tactics.

Mooney said: ‘’We have spoken about it, and know Renfrew, who are in a league division above us, will give us a tough game. But we are also hard to beat, and have guys who can score goals.

“We can’t afford to go out looking for the draw, we need to stay positive and aim for the victory. It would be great to win the section, not just for Martin and myself, but for all the players and the hard-working committee for all the effort they put in to the club.’’

Kick-off at Ravenscraig tomorrow is at 2pm. Greenock Juniors are sponsored by Regents Vehicle Sales, Greenock, Kingsley Wood Solicitors and Notaries, and the Lighthouse Bar.

l BETTING giants William Hill have announced their odds for the forthcoming Junior league season.

Both Greenock and Port Glasgow are listed as long shots to win the Central League First Division, with the bookies chalking up a price of 25/1 against an Inverclyde title triumph.

Kilsyth are the 11/4 favourites to lift the trophy, with Neilston at 7/2 and St Anthony’s at 11/2.
