CALL: McCaffrey.

MORTON defender Stuart McCaffrey says Morton need to be smarter if they are to avoid being hit by another late suckerpunch.

The ex-St Johnstone defender, above, was pleased with his side’s performance on Saturday - but believes the team will have to be more astute to pick up points on the road.

He said: “We’re disappointed not to have come away with at least a point, but there’s no disgrace in the way we played today.

“We had the lion’s share of possession, and we’ve come here and played well against a strongly-fancied team in the First Division, so I think we can go away with our heads held high.

"But we need to be a wee bit more streetwise when we’re away from home and realise we don’t always have try to force the play the way we did.

“At half-time, the gaffer stressed that if we did that and gave the ball away, we’d end up getting caught out by a counter attack and it turned out to be the case.

“But I don’t really think we had a bad part of the game, and if we can play like that most weeks then I don’t think we’ll be too far away.”

Meanwhile, Morton boss Allan Moore lamented his side’s lack of cutting edge.

He said: “It’s not often you come to Dunfermline and get mugged but, at the end of the day, the game’s about putting the ball in the net and we never did that.

“Our balls into the box were absolutely shocking and that’s what’s cost us.

“We had six or seven great opportunities to get crosses in, and without a man to beat, but we didn’t give our strikers much chance to score, especially when we had that much time to deliver.

“So that’s something Mark McNally and myself are going to have to look at and work on, as we don’t want to be known as a great football team without any punch.”

Dunfermline gaffer Jim McIntyre said: “Morton were sharper than us, passed the ball better than us and we have our defenders to thank for keeping us in it.

“But I think the difference was the finishing.”
