LEFT OUT: Stewart Greacen has been watching from the bench as Morton kick off their season.

STEWART Greacen believes an injury suffered during pre-season has robbed him of his starting slot and held him back him from becoming a key figure in Allan Moore’s Morton side.

The defender, 28, tore his calf muscle while training with the squad in England and was unable to play any part in Ton’s first fixtures of the season.

His absence has allowed new signings Marc Smyth, Grant Evans and Stuart McCaffrey to establish themselves in the side, leaving Greacen to endure a spell on the sidelines.

Greacen told the Tele: “It’s frustrating as I’ve not had much football at all other than two games at the start of pre-season.

“Unfortunately I picked up an injury during pre-season and I wasn’t able to stake a claim and the competitive games started before I was back fit.

“I got injured and the boys who played in the first few games have done well and kept a few clean sheets, so I just have to be patient.”

His disappointment has been compounded by the loss of the captain’s armband, an honour Greacen had held at the club since 2004.

However, the defender has never been one to gripe and is aiming to win his manager’s approval with a series of impressive performances during training.

He said: “The longer it goes the more frustrating it is, but I’d rather work hard than moan and I need to be ready to take my chance if I get it.

“I don’t like that I’m not playing but I understand that if the team are playing well then you’ve not really got any cause to complain.

“If we lose a few games and I’m still not playing then maybe that will be a bit more worrying but right now I’ll just keep working hard in training.”

And while he is consigned to warm the bench for the moment, Greacen is confident he will get his chance when another testing campaign eventually takes its toll.

He added: “It’s a long season and I’m pretty sure with injuries and players losing form everybody will get a fair crack of the whip.”
