SORE ONE: David receives treatment after tackle in Stirling game.
INJURY-jinxed David MacGregor doesn’t know when he will be fit to play again after suffering damaged ankle ligaments on the opening day of the season.
The defender only earned a new contract at Morton after convincing manager Allan Moore he had fully recovered from a series of injury woes that have plagued his career.
But he was crocked after a tackle from ex-Ton midfielder Chris Aitken after half an hour of the first-day fixture at Cappielow against Stirling Albion.
And although MacGregor is remaining upbeat, the nature of his injury makes it impossible for the club’s medical staff to set a date for a return to action.
MacGregor told the Tele this week: “I’ve damaged the ligaments in my ankle so obviously that takes a bit of time to heal.
“It’s still quite painful and I can’t run or anything just now. I’m basically taking it day by day.
“Obviously I’d like to return as soon as possible but I can’t put a timescale on it at the moment.
“It’s getting better but not as quick as I’d like, and the physios are treating it every day.
“But I’m going to work hard to get back up to fitness and then get back in the team as soon as possible.”
The injury is all the more frustrating as MacGregor had worked especially hard during pre-season to ensure his fitness was not in doubt for the start of the league campaign.
His efforts were noted by Moore, who installed him at right back, and the 29-year-old is hoping his improved fitness levels will aid his recovery.
He said: “It was as good as I’ve felt for a few seasons. I had a right good pre-season and hadn’t missed a session until I got injured.
“I’m hoping the hard work I put in over the summer and during pre-season will stand me in good stead for when I do come back.”
Moore has now been forced to alter his defence and MacGregor admits this brings an unwelcome disruption so early in the season.
He added: “If you get a settled team, it helps everybody, but it’s rare to keep a regular eleven over the course of a season. But consistency of selection can help a team go on a good run of results.”
