BOSS: Mooney.

AFTER their tremendous performance in the league on Saturday, whipping Perthshire 6-0, Greenock return to League Cup action tonight, when they face Shotts Bon Accord in a quarter-final tie at Ravenscraig.

The Lanarkshire club are a league division higher than Stevie Mooney’s men, and were one of only two clubs to rack up more goals than Greenock in their League Cup group matches, netting an impressive 19 in four games.

However, their section included a poor Newmains side, who conceded just as many.

But after Greenock’s stunning start to the season, having won all five of their opening games, Mooney, pictured above, feels his side have nothing to fear this evening.

He said: “It will be a big step up from Saturday, and Shotts will be well drilled.

“We will no doubt be the underdogs, but we fully deserve to be in the quarter-finals, and right now we don’t fear anyone.”

Kenny McKay leads the Greenock scoring stakes with seven to his name this early in the season, but skipper Thomas Docherty has also played his part, netting four times, mostly from outside the box.

Another four-goal hero, Ryan MacDonald, comes back into the reckoning for tonight after work commitments ruled him out of Saturday’s match.

The squad is excited about reaching the quarter-final stage for the first time in a few years, but Mooney is urging caution.

He added: “Yes, we are full of confidence, but we haven’t won anything yet, and it will take a good display tonight to make it through to the semi-finals.

“But there should be a good atmosphere, and we will just try to enjoy the occasion and play to our ability.”

Kick-off at Ravenscraig tonight is at 6.30pm, with the match going straight to penalties if level after 90 minutes.

l Greenock Juniors are sponsored by Regents Vehicle Sales, Greenock, Kingsley Wood Solicitors and Notaries, and the Lighthouse Bar.
