DEFEAT: Top scorer Kenny Mckay was unable to stop Greenock exiting cup.

GREENOCK’S bid for League Cup glory is over, after they were bundled out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage last night.

They never reached the heights of the excellent form they displayed to get to the knockout phase of the tournament, partly through their own shortcomings on the night, but also through a stuffy showing from the visitors.

However, Shotts’ dour style of play hardly made for a classic cup encounter, and the 90 minutes came and went with barely a handful of real scoring opportunities at either end.

Half an hour passed before either goal was seriously threatened. Mark Sideserf ought to have opened the scoring for Shotts, but skied the ball well over the bar from just six yards out.

At the other end, the hard-working Alan Jamieson then sent over an inviting cross for Kenny McKay, but the striker’s touch eluded him for once and the chance was lost.

Just as the prospect of a penalty shoot-out was looming, Shotts took the lead midway through the second half, when slack marking in the home defence allowed Gary McStay to head home from a corner kick, and the visitors clinched victory with a stoppage-time goal from sub Steven Barker.

It was not the result Greenock boss Stevie Mooney, left, wanted as he headed off to prepare for his forthcoming wedding on Saturday.

He said: ‘’I am disappointed we did not get further in the tournament. But I am proud of the way we matched a team who I think will be challenging for promotion to the Super Premier League this season. Shotts made it hard for us, and the first goal was always going to be crucial.’’

GREENOCK: Monk, Irvine, Stirling, B McLaughlin, M Docherty, Fleming, Kearns (Bradley 77), J McLaughlin (MacDonald 68), McKay, T Docherty, A Jamieson (McCormick 87). Subs not used: R Jamieson, Crawford, K Docherty, Mooney.
