OLD PALS ACT: Stuart McCaffrey after game in Perth on Tuesday.

STUART McCaffrey found himself in familiar surroundings this week - but he already feels right at home at Morton following a summer transfer.

The defender arrived at Cappielow from St Johnstone, but made a swift return to McDiarmid Park in the Co-operative Insurance Cup on Tuesday.

And while McCaffrey enjoyed playing at his old stomping ground, he insisted he has completely integrated into the Ton squad and is revelling in life at his new club.

In his first interview with the Tele, McCaffrey said: “It was good to play against my old pals and I think we played quite well.

“The good thing about football is that when you move you always end up with the same sort of personalities and characters in the dressing room and the same rubbish we talk about.

“It only takes you five minutes to settle in and immediately you have 16 or 17 new pals when you move.

“I’ve been there four or five weeks and it’s been great. I already feel a part of the team like everyone else.”

McCaffrey’s speedy assimilation has been further boosted by the formidable partnership he has struck with Marc Smyth in the centre of defence.

However, the 31-year-old is not surprised and feels quality players will always find it easy to gel.

He said: “It helps when you play with good players and Marc is a good player. He’s been around the first division for a number of years and has good experience.

“I’m hopeful we can continue to play as well as we’ve done so far and I have enjoyed playing with Marc.

“It’s good to play with good players as they make the game easy for you and hopefully we can continue the good run of form we’ve been on.”

McCaffrey has already won promotion from the first division with his two previous clubs - St Johnstone and Inverness Caledonian Thistle - and is confident Morton can achieve similar success in time.

He added: “That has to be the middle to long-term goal and if it takes two or three seasons to do that then I don’t think it’s an unrealistic target for us.”
