RARING TO GO: Grant Evans in action against St Mirren's Lee Mair on Saturday.
GRANT Evans insists he is ready to fill the breach left by Andy Graham who suffered facial injuries in Morton's Renfrewshire Cup Final defeat at the weekend.
Graham is due to see a specialist to assess the extent of his injuries following a clash of heads with St Mirren's Jereon Tesselaar - which have been confirmed as a fractured eye socket and broken cheekbone.
The Ton defender, pictured below, is expected to be sidelined for at least two months meaning Evans will be required to fill the right-back berth.
And while the 21-year-old admits he is up for the task, his immediate concern was for his stricken team-mate.
Evans told the Tele: "Obviously I would never ever, ever wish anybody an injury - especially one like that.
"I think he has fractured his eye socket and broken his cheekbone so I don't know how long that will keep him out for.
"He is going to go and see a specialist once the swelling goes down to see if he needs an operation or not but that's as much as I know.
"You are hoping to get your chance somehow but not through something as horrible as that, as it doesn't even feel right talking about stepping in.
"Obviously I'll have to and hopefully I can take my chance and prove myself and make that position mine, but I'm gutted for the big man.
"He works so hard and was really looking forward to the game against St Mirren as he's a big Morton fan - you had to put a leash on him to hold him back."
The competitive season begins in earnest on Saturday when Ton travel to Stranraer for the first round of the Ramsdens Cup.
And while disappointed at their 4-2 defeat to rivals St Mirren, Evans feels the squad are raring to get the new campaign started.
He said: "We had a disappointing result on Saturday and we've maybe not had the results we've wanted in pre-season but I don't think we've played too badly.
"The game against St Mirren was probably our only disappointing performance - I thought we played quite well against Walsall and Motherwell. The boys just want to get a good result in the cup with a good performance and get the competitive games underway."
