MORTON were officially relegated from the Championship today after an insipid 2-0 loss at Alloa Athletic.
After consecutive home wins, manager Kenny Shiels selected 10 of the same starting XI that bested Livingston against the Wasps.
The only change was the inclusion of Mark Russell in place of injured first choice left-back Marc Fitzpatrick.
And the teenager was at the heart of a promising early move which would prove pivotal.
He combined with Barrie McKay down the left and sent over an inviting cross that found Dougie Imrie at the far post.
Captain Imrie met the delivery with a diving header but failed to hit the target.
Had the ball nestled in the net, Ton would have had the impetus.
As it was, they fell behind on 15 minutes when Kevin Cawley headed home a Ryan McCord cross and immediately looked a beaten team.
And when McCord converted a Michael Doyle cross on 53 minutes Morton's fate was sealed.
It was a display devoid of fight and a disheartening way for the Cappielow club to surrender their Championship status.
