MORTON find themselves the laughing stock of Scottish football tonight after a disgraceful and scarcely believable 10-2 humiliation by Hamilton Accies.

That is not a typo. Ton really did concede 10 goals - yes TEN - in a league match against opposition playing professional football in the same division.

In what was a truly pitiful end to a pitiful season, Kenny Shiels’ side fell behind after four minutes when Mickael Antoine-Curier headed home a Grant Gillespie corner.

Although Tony Andreu stabbed in a second three minutes later, it looked as though Ton might make a fight of it when Dougie Imrie halved the deficit with a fine finish on 22 minutes.

But Andreu slammed a Louis Longridge cross beyond Nicolas Caraux to start the ball rolling again on 32 minutes.

Longridge then made it four two minutes later and Andreu completed a first-half hat-trick from the penalty spot after a blatant Rowan Vine handball to make it 5-1 at the interval.

After gifting Accies a spot-kick one minute before the break, Vine blew the opportunity to convert one at the opposite end after Imrie was felled by goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert.

Antoine-Curier and defender Mikey Devlin both found the net before Imrie scored his second of the afternoon with an acrobatic effort which reduced the scoreline to 7-2.

But the hosts continued to rack up the goals, with Antoine-Curier scoring twice, taking his own tally to four, either side of a Stuart Findlay own goal in the final 12 minutes.

Despite equalling their record win, a 10-2 victory over Cowdenbeath in October 1932, Hamilton’s efforts proved to be in vain after Dundee beat Dumbarton 2-1 to claim the title.

On 5 May, 1894 – just 20 years after the club was actually formed – Morton lost 10-1 to now defunct Port Glasgow Athletic.

Imrie scoring his second goal was all that prevented Morton from matching that ignominious and unwanted 120-year-old record. Make no mistake, this was a dark day in the history of the club.

Although Shiels was recently confirmed as the man who would lead the Cappielow club in League One next season, it would come as a major shock if the board don’t at least reassess that position in light of today’s extraordinary circumstances.
