Ton made the mammoth trek up the east coast of the country looking to build on last week’s vital home victory against title rivals Stranraer.

The prospects of back to back wins looked remote when they fell behind to a controversial penalty 11 minutes into the second half.

Sean Crighton felled Andy Rodgers with an awkward standing challenge right on the edge of the box, and referee Barry Cook initially awarded a free-kick.

However, he quickly re-evaluated his decision based on the advice of far side linesman Craig Sim and instead pointed to the spot.

Striker Rodgers stepped up and fired to Derek Gaston’s left while the Ton keeper dived to his right to open the scoring.

But Jim Duffy’s men were back on level terms within four minutes. Thomas O’Ware found Declan McManus inside the box and the hitman calmly slotted home his 14th goal of the season.

The Ton boss introduced Ross Caldwell in place of skipper Peter MacDonald, who looked a little rusty on his return after a month out.

And the former St Mirren man would have a huge say in the outcome of the match, making crucial contributions as the Greenock men scored twice in the closing stages to seal the win.

On 87 minutes, he charged clear down the left and picked out McManus with a square pass which Ton’s top scorer turned into the net via the post to hit the 15-goal mark.

Then, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, the roles were reversed when Caldwell rifled into the net after McManus found him with a drilled cross from the right.

The win meant Ton had picked up six points out of six at a notoriously difficult venue, a feat they have only achieved once before.

It was back in season 2006/07 that the Cappielow club won 4-2 and 2-1 at Balmoor on their way to the Second Division title.
