GREENOCK could seal their place in the Super League First Division for another season tonight, when Yoker come to Ravenscraig.

It’s the bottom four sides who take the dreaded drop, with Thorniewood and Ardeer already going down.

Greenock look to have done enough to stay up, but they are still on the fringes of the relegation zone, so even a point tonight would surely remove all doubt.

But it’s arguably even more of a crunch game for Yorker, who sit third bottom, albeit with two or three games in hand over the teams immediately above them.

However, Greenock will be looking to recover from Saturday’s morale-sapping defeat to Benburb in the West of Scotland Cup, when they threw away a two goal lead and ended up being dumped out of the prestigious competition.

A red card for Allan Docherty in that match means he faces a three-match ban, but with the suspension not starting until Friday, tonight could be the striker’s last game in a Greenock jersey this season.

Barry McLaughlin has now served his recent ban and looks set to return this evening, but skipper Tam Jamieson remains suspended, as the club’s deplorable run of red cards continues to bite.

However the Ravenscraig men have got the better of Yoker on the two occasions they have met this season.

A 2-0 league win at Holm Park early in the campaign was followed up more recently with a 5-0 home thrashing of Yoker in late March in the West of Scotland Cup.

But ‘Nock boss Martin Campbell thinks that stunning win might make tonight’s opponents even more determined.

He said: “Yoker will no doubt have that defeat on their minds and will be out to make amends, as much for that as getting the league points they badly need. But we ourselves are not out of the woods yet, although the clubs below us would no doubt much rather they were in our position.

“Saturday’s loss was a sore one for us, and I will be looking to the players to put on a far better performance tonight.” Tonight’s game at Ravenscraig kicks off at 7pm.

Greenock Juniors are sponsored by SAVEHEAT, and the Lighthouse Bar. Additional sponsorship for tonight’s game has come from the Lighthouse Bar, to whom the club expresses its appreciation.
