Cup tie something to savour

AMIDST all the despair of constant postponements, Greenock can look forward to another mouth-watering cup clash later in the season.

For in this week's draw for the Central League Cup, they have been paired with Premier League giants Pollok.

The match at Ravenscraig follows Greenock having pulled another of the junior game's leading lights, Irvine Meadow, out of the hat for the next round of the West of Scotland Cup.

Right now, though, manager Stevie Mooney would be happy for his side to play one of the Greenock Boys' Brigade teams if it meant his club was guaranteed some match action.

If tomorrow's game at Ravenscraig against Yoker fails a pitch inspection, it will have been EIGHT weeks since Greenock last played. The club's training routine has also been affected, although they were able to make us of the indoor facilities at Inverclyde Academy this week.

Mooney said: "We are having good work-outs, but there is no substitute for the real thing on a Saturday. When we looked at the park on Wednesday night, it was rock solid, so we are not hopeful of the game going ahead. I really feel that, although there would be problems, it is time we thought about summer football."

Should a miracle happen and conditions radically improve, Mooney himself will struggle to play, having been floored with a flu bug this week. Roland Fabiani's shift work with the police would also see him ruled out.

After a promising start against Yoker last time round, when Greenock took an early lead before going down 2-1, Mooney feels his side are capable of taking something from the return match.

He added: "Yoker are no doubt one of the better teams in the division and will probably win promotion, but I actually thought we deserved a draw at their place."

Fans should note that with the daylight hours now lengthening, kick-offs are back to the usual time of 2pm.
