New boy at Port

PORT GLASGOW have added to their ranks this week, with another new signing.

Chris McGarvie, 22, has put pen to paper for the club. The giant centre-half joins the Port after impressing manager Craig Brown in a series of bounce games.

After playing for an under-21 side in Renfrewshire, the 6 feet 3 inches tall stopper had been out of the game for a year due to work commitments.

Brown said: "Chris was recommended to me and, after having a good look at him in the friendlies, I am pleased to have signed him. He looks to be a good prospect."

McGarvie joins Kevin McKay and Thomas Molloy as the Port 'new boys', but none of the trio is guaranteed to feature when the Port entertain Blantyre Vics at Ravenscraig tomorrow.

After a hard-fought 1-0 win at Thorniewood last week, the same 11 may get the nod again, with Scott Nugent sitting out the final game of his three-match suspension.

Fellow striker Kevin Struthers missed training on Wednesday with a niggling knee injury, but is expected to recover in time for Saturday.

Struthers will be looking to join his team-mates in erasing the unhappy memories of the Port's trip to Blantyre earlier in the season.

Then, they took the lead before a dramatic collapse saw them concede three times in the space of 10 minutes.

Struthers then missed a penalty to get the Port right back into the game, which the Vics went on to win 4-1.

With the Lanarkshire side hovering in a mid-table position in the league, two places below the Port, Brown appreciates the importance of tomorrow's clash.

He said: "Just like last week, it is another of those games where a win would create some distance between us and our opponents, whereas if we lost, they would be just one point behind us, so it's a vital match."

Kick-off at Ravenscraig is at 2pm.
