Port's player boost

IT'S Groundhog Day for Port Glasgow tomorrow, with another attempt to head down the M74 to face Lesmahagow.

Last week's match was called off due to a frozen pitch, and the chances of the game going ahead at the second time of asking look set to be scuppered by this week's snow.

In the unlikely event of the league clash getting the green light, the Port would have Kevin Struthers back from holiday.

"And Ged Hoey and new signing Kevin McKay, who were both unavailable last week due to work commitments, would come back into the reckoning.

The Port's preparations have been hampered by the weather, with Wednesday's training session having to be cancelled due to the snow covering the astroturf pitch at St Stephen's High School.

But manager Craig Brown says his men will still be ready to go, should the conditions at Lesmahagow dramatically improve.

He said: "Although Wednesday's training stint was ruled out, we had a tough session on Monday night, so we will be ready.

"We really want the game to go ahead, not just because we all want back into action, but also because it would save us having to go there in midweek, with Lesmahagow being one of the furthest away grounds in our league."

However, with the odds being heavily in favour of yet another call off, the fixture is likely to be shunted to a midweek in April or May, leaving the Port with 12 league games still to play.

Brown, though, does not see that as a problem.

He said: "I really don't mind having extra games in midweeks.

"If you go on a good run, then it helps to maintain the momentum, while on the other hand if you suffer a defeat you only have a few days until the next match to get it out of your system."

There's no doubt, however, that players, supporters, officials, and reporters alike, just want to get back into the Saturday routine which is fast becoming a fading memory.

Kick-off at Craighead Park, Lesmahagow, is at 2pm.
