Greenock facing more disappointment

HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL: Greenock boss Stevie Mooney is hoping against hope that a game goes ahead tomorrow.

WITH a glamour West of Scotland Cup tie on the horizon, the last thing Greenock would want is to have yet another idle day tomorrow.

But that prospect looks to be inevitable, with this week's wintry blast reminding us that spring has most certainly not yet sprung.

The Ravenscraig men would like to get some league action under their belts, ahead of next Saturday's cup clash with Premier League giants Irvine Meadow.

As last week, tomorrow's scheduled opponents are Royal Albert, sitting bottom of the pile in the Central League Second Division.

Greenock boss Stevie Mooney is clinging to the hope that there might be a miraculous improvement in the weather conditions to allow the game to go ahead.

He said: "The last time we had snow in midweek, it all cleared very suddenly on the Friday and overnight, allowing our game against Yoker to take place. I must admit, though, that the chances of that happening again look to be remote."

Should that miracle happen, Roland Fabiani would be available, having returned from the sunshine of Lanzarote, no doubt in a state of shock on seeing the white-out on landing. The big defender says the current spate of call-offs is the worst he has ever experienced in his many years in the junior game.

Meanwhile, the squad can only continue with their training, though even that was limited on Wednesday to an indoor session at Inverclyde Academy. However, weather permitting, they could get a run-out in a friendly against St Anthony's, scheduled for Monday evening on the astro-turf at Penilee, weather permitting.

And, of course, every postponement means more midweek matches when the lighter nights kick in from mid-April onwards.

In that respect, though, there is some consolation for Greenock. Aside from their involvement in the West of Scotland and Central League Cups, their particular league only involves 20 matches, of which they have already played 11 - so they may not suffer as much as others from a fixtures pile-up.

In any event, Mooney remains optimistic.

He added: "Even if that did happen, we have a big enough squad to cope with midweek games. But right now, we just want to get back into action."

Kick-off at Ravenscraig is at 2pm.

Greenock Juniors are sponsored by Kingsley Wood Solicitors and Notaries, and the Lighthouse Bar.
