Greenock looking for repeat result
GREENOCK head to the Tollcross area of Glasgow tomorrow to face Vale of Clyde.
But they will know that even if the promised improvement in the temperatures does occur, the pitch at the Vale's Fullarton Park might not pass an inspection.
Vale of Clyde have Bellshill Athletic as their temporary tenants, and the pitch was ruled unplayable for three successive weeks for Greenock's Scottish Cup tie against the Lanarkshire club at the tail end of 2011.
But Stevie Mooney's men can travel in good heart should the match go ahead, after an encouraging 3-1 victory over Largs Thistle in a friendly match at Inverclyde Academy on Monday night.
Two goals from John Carter, right, and a strike from a young trialist gave Greenock the win against an almost full-strength Largs side.
Mooney said: "The boys worked hard and played well, so we really hope tomorrow's game goes ahead.
"We need to get our momentum going again, after a couple of disappointing results against Bellshill in the cup and at Yoker in the league.
"Vale of Clyde are bottom of the league table and will be fighting for every point, so it will not be easy."
A repeat of the 2-1 scoreline in Greenock's favour when the sides clashed at Battery Park last November would do nicely. But Mooney's heart-rate could do without a repeat of how the win was achieved.
With just 10 minutes remaining Vale of Clyde were leading 1-0.
But Stevie Dallas equalised and then in an amazing climax to the game, Ross Kearns missed a penalty before Craig McCormick snatched the points for Greenock five minutes into injury time. In team news, John Forsyth remains suspended, and it has been confirmed that Lee Mitchell has been released by the club. The young striker has gone back to amateur football with Drumchapel 21s. Meanwhile, Mooney has been giving his thoughts on former Greenock skipper Thomas Docherty, who left Ravenscraig after 14 years to move to Dalry Thistle at the start of the season.
But after just five months with Dalry, Docherty has been put up for transfer.
Mooney said: "I have a lot of respect for Thomas, but returning to your old club doesn't often work out well. In any event we probably wouldn't have the funds to facilitate a transfer, even if I was interested, but in this game you never say never."
l Vale of Clyde v Greenock at Fullarton Park is scheduled for a 2pm kick-off.
Greenock Juniors are sponsored by Regents Vehicle Sales, Greenock, and the Lighthouse Bar.
