GREENOCK skipper Tam Jamieson is adamant the team has what it takes to climb out of the relegation zone.

The bottom four clubs take the drop from the Super Premier League First Division at the end of the season, and the Ravenscraig men have been languishing there for the past few months.

That’s despite picking up three precious points against title contenders Beith last Saturday — but a similar result at Kilwinning tomorrow looks likely to move them above the danger area.

And Jamieson insists the team can do it.

He told the Tele: “The boys have a lot of desire, and I am 100 per cent confident we will stay up.

“No-one fancied us against Beith, but we feel we can get a result against anybody, and the Beith match just proved that.

“That result can really spur us on, and we need to take that confidence to Kilwinning tomorrow.” It was an eventful match for the captain last Saturday, when he was the victim of a head-butt from Kenny McLean, which led to a red card for the Beith man amid stormy scenes. Jamieson suffered a chipped tooth, which required dental treatment on Monday.

But a trip away this weekend means Jamieson won’t return to the fray tomorrow, which he admits disappoints him.

He added: “It is a pre-arranged trip, but I am sure there is enough depth in the squad to go to Kilwinning and get another good result.” A glance at the league table shows that, realistically, there are probably three teams Greenock will be targeting in a bid to escape the relegation area — and tomorrow’s opponents are one of them. Kilwinning may be six places above the ‘Nock at present, but they are only five points better off, and have played two games more.

And although Greenock boss Stevie Mooney knows every game is important, he concedes that some can have more significance than others.

Mooney said: “Kilwinning are definitely one of the sides we want to catch, so another good result on Saturday would give us a real boost.

“They boys were great last week, and I feel the Kenny McLean incident overshadowed their achievement a bit as it grabbed the headlines.

“It must be emphasised that our guys got that result against a team who are getting paid, with some on good money. So it was a tremendous performance, but we must go all out for the same tomorrow.’’ In addition to Jamieson’s absence, Andy Irvine remains on the sidelines through suspension, but Alan Williams is available again after missing the Beith game.

The only other worry is keeper Mark Monk, who missed Wednesday night’s training session through illness.

With back-up keeper Alastair Shields still out of action with a wrist injury, Mooney will be hoping Monk will have recovered in time for Saturday.

Kick-off at Abbey Park, Kilwinning, is at 2pm.
