PORT Glasgow play their final home game of the season tomorrow.

In what has been very much an up-and-down season for the Port, their only interest now is seeing whether they can amass six points from their last three matches in a bid to move a further place up the league table and finish sixth.

But tomorrow’s visitors, Forth Wanderers, have much more lofty ambitions.

After a number of years in the doldrums, the South Lanarkshire side are in with a great chance of promotion. With just one further game to play after tomorrow, the Wanderers are in a four-way chase along with Wishaw, Blantyre Vics and Vale of Clyde for one of just three promotion spots available.

Anything other than three points tomorrow could deal a fatal blow to their chances, but the Port have pride to play for, as well as beginning to look to next season.

Manager Craig Brown, pictured, said: “I think the Vics and Vale of Clyde will go up, leaving Forth to battle it out with Wishaw for the last promotion spot. And with Wishaw being one of our two remaining matches after tomorrow, we will certainly have a big say in who goes up. So I expect a tricky match on Saturday, but we more than held our own when we travelled to Forth last autumn, so have nothing to fear.’’ It was 2-2 when the sides last met, with only a very late Forth equaliser depriving the Port of what Brown feels would have been a deserved win.

It looked to be a promising campaign for Port Glasgow at that point, but it hasn’t worked out that way, and the manager has pinpointed what he sees as the main problem.

He added: “We have the quality, but at times we have just not defended properly. There are occasions when, if we lose one goal, we collapse and then lose others in rapid succession.

“That then leaves us chasing games, and eventually gives us too much to do.

“So, looking ahead, we need to learn how to get through periods in matches when we are under pressure.’’ There’s a new face at the club this week, with Dean McKay having officially signed. The former St Anthony’s midfielder has featured as a trialist in some recent games, and has now put pen to paper.

And Chris McEleny will be back in goals tomorrow.

The keeper had been troubled by a niggling foot injury, but has now recovered.

Meanwhile, SJFA officials have confirmed the reason for Newmains having three points deducted following their 4-3 win over the Port at Parklea in January.

It was certainly a much-changed Newmains side from that which was thumped 5-0 by Port Glasgow in the corresponding away match just two months previously.

And they have now been found guilty of ‘not fielding sufficient registered players’ at the Parklea game.

But the points deduction is little consolation for the Port, who were not awarded them by default, with league bosses deciding the deduction was sufficient punishment for the Lanarkshire club.

Kick-off at Parklea tomorrow is at 2pm.
