PORT Glasgow picked up an away point in this Sectional League Cup opener, but left disappointed it wasn’t three after dominating the match for long periods.

With Renfrew having ground issues of their own following the recent sale of Western Park, the match was played at Keanie Park, the home of Johnstone Burgh.

But it was the Port who got to grips with the match early on, creating a series of opportunities.

However striker Graham Black failed to capitalise on two chances, the first a header from a Gus Gault corner, followed by another close range effort from a cross by Alan Jamieson.

Scott Paterson then had a free header from a Gault corner, but missed the target.

But after another succession of corners and free-kicks, the Port eventually made the breakthrough on the half-hour mark.

Another Gault corner led to a header being blocked, but Paul Coyle — pictured — pounced on the rebound to slam home.

Renfrew made a change at half time, changing goalkeepers with Dale Burgess replacing Baird, and it was a better 45 minutes for the hosts.

The equaliser came 10 minutes after the re-start, with former Vale of Leven striker Scott Arthur scoring on his debut, netting a rebound from his own shot.

Shortly afterwards Martin Dempsey replaced McLeary and with almost his first touch, he saw his shot saved by new Port keeper Robbie Graham.

But in the closing stages Port Glasgow regained control of the match, forcing another series of corners.

Paterson headed wide from one of them, while Brendan Grana had a goal-bound shot blocked as the match ended all-square.

The Port’s assistant manager Scott Jackson said : ‘’We definitely played well enough to have won the match, and deserved three points rather than one. If we had got a second goal while we were one up it would have killed off the match, so this was a good example of the need to score while we are on top.’’ PORT GLASGOW: Graham, McClement, K. Docherty, Paterson, Coyle, Jamieson (Connolly 75), Gault (McKay 75), Grana, Black, McAfee (Nugent 70), McCormick. Subs not used: Sharp, Ellis.
