PORT Glasgow head to Cumbernauld tonight for their semi-final tie in the Sectional League Cup.

And if the side can maintain their unbeaten run, they will contest the first major trophy of the season against either Wishaw or Blantyre Vics in next month’s final.

Like last Wednesday’s quarter-final match at Thorniewood, Craig Brown’s men will again be competing against a side two leagues above them.

As with the Port, Cumbernauld have also yet to taste defeat this season. They breezed through their four group matches with a 100 per cent record, and won 1-0 at Larkhall last midweek to reach the semi-finals.

Then last Saturday, the new town club took a point from their opening league match against Maybole, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

But the Port have shown they can handle the big occasion, and the majority of the squad should be available for tonight’s game.

However, the cause of Paul Gordon’s recent calf injury has been revealed as a torn muscle, ruling the versatile player out for around another month.

Meanwhile, both Ross Kearns and Jo Jo Connolly were unable to train on Monday evening after suffering injuries which led to both being substituted early in the second half of Saturday’s league victory at Forth, where Connolly scored the only goal of the game from a spot-kick.

But Brown, pictured, is hopeful both will have recovered in time to play this evening, in a match which the manager says everyone is eagerly anticipating.

He said: “I know a bit about Cumbernauld, and they are a good footballing side, with a dangerous front two, but the fact they are in higher league makes no difference to us.

“After all, we went to Thorniewood last week, like Cumbernauld another side from the Super League First Division, and were deserved winners. So I don’t see why we can’t do the same again.’’ Kick-off at Guys Meadow Stadium this evening is at 6.30pm. The match will go straight to penalties if level after 90 minutes.
