PORT Glasgow made it two wins out of two in the league with this excellent victory at East Kilbride.

Although East Kilbride have been in the doldrums for a few seasons, they have greatly improved their set-up both on and off the park over the past few months, and are no-one’s pushovers.

Indeed, it took an 89th minute goal from striker Scott Nugent to clinch the points, with another from sub Graham Black deep into injury time giving the score-line a pleasing look to it for the Port.

Port Glasgow dominated the first half, with two early chances for Alan Jamieson. The home keeper thwarted him for the first opportunity, while the second attempt flew over the bar.

Nugent, pictured, was also denied by the East Kilbride custodian, as Port Glasgow forced a succession of corners and free-kicks.

And it was Jamieson who eventually put them ahead, with a great left-foot volley from the edge of the box flying into the net.

Port keeper Robbie Graham had little to do in the opening half, but remained alert enough to pull off a couple of saves on the occasions when he was called into action.

But the keeper was kept much busier for the first 20 minutes of the second half, as East Kilbride came more into the game.

And the home side’s pressure paid off on 65 minutes, when Port defender Kearn Docherty allowed a through ball to slip past him, and a home striker latched on to it to shoot past Graham.

The game then looked like ending in a draw, but on the 89th minute a great run by Gary Pettigrew ended when he was brought down just outside the box.

And from the resultant free-kick, Nugent blasted a 25 yard thunderbolt into the net to put the Port back into the lead.

And the points were definitely clinched on 92 minutes, when a set-piece caused panic in the East Kilbride box, and sub Black pounced to toe-poke the ball home from six yards out.

Port Glasgow’s assistant manager Scott Jackson said: ‘’I am absolutely delighted with the result. The boys showed great battling qualities against a very good East Kilbride side, and although we left it late, I think we deserved to get the three points.’’ PORT GLASGOW: Graham, K.
