GREENOCK begin their bid for Scottish Cup glory tomorrow, with an intriguing tie against Newtongrange Star at Ravenscraig.

The Midlothian side were formerly one of the bigger names in Junior football, but after a spell in the doldrums they are showing signs of establishing themselves as a major force once again.

With a third of their league fixtures played, a 1-0 victory over Musselburgh last weekend saw them return to the top of the highly competitive East Superleague, a notable achievement given the division contains sides of the calibre of Linlithgow Rose, Boness United and Bonnyrigg Rose.

‘Star’ are unbeaten in their 12 league games played so far, and seem to be particularly strong at the back, with a mere seven goals conceded.

Whilst Greenock had a bye in the first round of the cup, Newtongrange began their campaign with a 5-0 away victory at Scone Thistle.

But writing on the club’s website, manager Alan Miller said he expects Greenock to be an altogether tougher proposition.

He said: “The trip to Greenock Juniors is undoubtedly a dangerous tie for us, but one we will approach in confident mood and looking forward to the backing of a large travelling support once again.” But Greenock can also take on tomorrow’s challenge with optimism, having won their last three matches. Mind you, they did have to rely on penalties before edging out Renfrew last Saturday in a West of Scotland Cup tie.

And manager Martin Campbell realises there will have to be a significant improvement on last weekend’s display if his side are to retain their involvement in the national cup competition beyond tomorrow.

He said: “I don’t know what happened last Saturday, but the atmosphere just felt terribly flat.

“So come tomorrow the boys will really need to be on their toes, as although I haven’t had the chance to see Newtongrange in action, reports suggest they are a top team and bang on form.

“But I don’t think the boys will have a problem getting motivated, as they have been excited in training this week about the match, and look to be well up for it.

“On paper we are definitely the slight underdogs, but the boys can pull it off if they perform at the top of their game.” In team news, Alan Williams looks set to retain the skipper’s armband, with Tam Jamieson still out injured.

Thomas Docherty misses out through attending a wedding, and it will be a late decision regarding Brendan Gillen, who was unable to train this week due to a knock suffered in the Renfrew game.

Fans should note that the tie kicks off at 2.30pm, half an hour later than the usual league games. If level after 90 minutes, it will go to a replay at Newtongrange next Saturday.

The match sponsor is Arthur Dempster, and Greenock treasurer Neil Martin said: ‘’We really appreciate the support of individuals like Arthur. It allows the club to continue to provide the facilities and equipment that players need.” Greenock Juniors are sponsored by SAVEHEAT, and the Lighthouse Bar.
