PORT Glasgow striker Scott Nugent aims to put some late Halloween frighteners on another defence tomorrow, as Johnstone Burgh come to Parklea.

Nugent has been on sensational form this season, and has bagged an amazing eight goals alone in just the Port’s last two home games.

That has taken his career total to 184, and with barely a quarter of the season gone, the hitman is already more than halfway towards his pre-season target.

Nugent, who celebrated his 29th birthday earlier this month, told the Tele: “It’s been a great season for me so far, and even though I have been with the Port for around 11 years, I never stop enjoying the feeling when the ball hits the net.

“Three seasons ago I totalled 37 goals, but the last two years have been more difficult, with just 10 and 12. So I am really pleased that I have already topped that in the current season, and I just want to keep the run going.’’ A goal or two from Nugent or his team-mates tomorrow would go a long way towards maintaining the Port’s position towards the top end of the Central League Second Division table.

But it’s an equally important match for Johnstone Burgh, who sit just one place below the Port and who would leapfrog them with a win tomorrow.

The sides have already met this season, with the Port running out comfortable 3-0 winners in a Sectional League Cup match in August.

However, the Burgh come to Parklea on the back of some decent league performances, and having beaten Brechin Vics 5-2 last Saturday in a Scottish Cup tie.

But, as Port boss Craig Brown points out, his men have been no slouches this season either.

He said: “The Burgh have been playing well recently, but so have we. It will be a tough game tomorrow, but we have set high standards for ourselves this season, and have been playing with a high tempo of football.” In team news, Paul Gordon has been hit with a three-match suspension following his needless red card at a time when the Port were cruising to victory in last week’s 6-0 Scottish Cup win against Fife club Ballingry Rovers.

It will be a late call for Mark Bowie and Kearn Docherty, as both struggle to regain full fitness, but Ross Kearns looks set to return after resuming training this week. Meanwhile, the Port will find out their opponents in the third round of the Scottish Cup next Tuesday, when the draw is made in Glasgow at lunchtime that day.
