PORT Glasgow will be hoping that their Scottish Cup tie in Aberdeen gets the green light at the second time of asking.

The third round match was called off following an inspection early last Saturday morning, after 36 hours of torrential rain had left Dyce’s park waterlogged.

But Norman Mackay, a long-serving member of the north east club’s committee, is optimistic that the game will get the go-ahead tomorrow.

He told the Tele last night: “Our pitch is normally very good for drainage, but the rainfall was so bad last week that even the best of parks would have struggled.

“It has been pretty much non-stop drizzle in the Aberdeen area this week, and that looks set to continue on Friday and Saturday.

“But I have been out spiking the pitch and, so far at least, things look promising for the game to take place.” The Port squad was preparing to leave last Saturday when the call came through just after 8am that the match was off.

And so assistant manager Scott Jackson hopes Norman’s prediction for tomorrow is correct.

He said: “After the call-off we just gave the boys the day off, but they have been in this week for their usual training sessions.

“We just hope it’s on tomorrow as we don’t want the tie to drag on for weeks and weeks.” The worry is, if that happens, that other sides in the Port’s league will steal a march on them and create some distance at the top end of the table.

But despite not having played a league fixture in two weeks, the Parklea men remain in third place, thanks to some surprising results affecting the other leading clubs.

One of these was Cambuslang Rangers’ 1-0 defeat at East Kilbride last week, a match which the Port management team took in after their own game was postponed.

For tomorrow’s cup tie, they will be without the unavailable Kearn Docherty and Mark Bowie, while defender Scott Paterson won’t know until today if his work commitments will allow him to make the journey north.

Also out are the still suspended duo of Scott Nugent and Paul Gordon.

Meanwhile, there’s sad news of the demise of Ballingry Rovers, whom the Port thumped 6-0 in the previous round.

The Fife club has folded after running up a string of debts to various companies and government agencies.

Jackson added: “We at Port Glasgow were all sorry to hear that. As well as the cup tie, we played Ballingry through in Fife in a pre-season friendly and they were all very welcoming people, so it’s always sad when that happens.” Kick-off tomorrow is at 1.45pm.
