GREENOCK will be hoping this week’s stormy weather doesn’t scupper their chances of building on last Saturday’s morale-boosting win at Largs.

Club officials say that although soft underfoot, the surface at Ravenscraig was still playable when they checked it out during Wednesday night’s training session at nearby Inverclyde Academy.

But with more rain forecast for late tonight and into Saturday morning, it’s a case of fingers crossed that the match against Maybole will go ahead.

The convincing 4-1 victory at Largs nudged Greenock a couple of points above the relegation zone, but it’s still a very congested bottom half of the league table, and so taking something from tomorrow’s game remains important.

However, it will be a tough challenge as Maybole have been quietly going about their business, with three wins on the trot moving them up to second place in the league table, albeit having played a few games more than the sides below.

Greenock manager Martin Campbell pinpointed the strengths of tomorrow’s opponents.

He said: “In terms of goals per game, Maybole’s record is similar to ours, but they don’t concede as many.

“They appear to have signed a couple of experienced ex-pros, so will no doubt be full of confidence, but so will we after last week’s excellent performance at Largs.” Recent signings from Largs, Barry McLaughlin and Barri Stanton, were ruled out from playing against their former club last week, but both will surely feature in some way tomorrow, with McLaughlin in particular brought back to the ’Nock to bolster up the defence.

But after last week’s foolish red card at Largs, Martin Dow is suspended, as is Martin McGowan, who has one match left to serve from the two-game suspension imposed following his red card at Pollok. But McGowan is unavailable tomorrow anyway, so he will be particularly keen for the game to go ahead.

Ryan Craig, who scored against Maybole in Greenock’s 3-1 win at Ladywell Stadium last October, is on holiday, but Kenny Munro could feature again as a trialist after making a good impression in his two appearances to date, which included getting one of the goals last Saturday.

Kick-off at Ravenscraig is scheduled for 1.45pm.

Greenock Juniors are sponsored by SAVEHEAT, and the Lighthouse Bar. The Lighthouse Bar are also this Saturday’s match sponsor, and are thanked by the club for their ‘significant support’.
