MORTON cruised through to the second round of the CIS Cup thanks to Peter Weatherson and Neil MacFarlane.

Weatherson was on target early in the first half to put Ton 1-0 up and MacFarlane's long-range rocket made it 2-0.

Paul McQuade pulled on back from the penalty spot before the break but Weatherson pounced again in the 51st minute to put the Cappielow outfit through.

Before the match began, there was a minute's silence for former England manager Sir Bobby Robson after his tragic death on Friday.

Then the Tele's CIS Cup mascot competition winner Keiran Hendry, from Greenock, was on hand to help the match get under way.

Morton started the match the stronger and went ahead after only seven minutes when Ryan McGuffie's cross found Weatherson unmarked in the box.

The big Englishman then sent his header past David Hay.

Then five minutes later, Stevie Masterton had a free-kick to take 25-yards out after Jim McAlister was fouled by Neil McCabe.

Masterton's effort cracked off the wall and ended up at the feet of MacFarlane, whose first time 30-yard shot flew past Hay.

The visitors kept piling on the pressure but conceded a penalty in the 31st minute when the assistant referee judged that a Jay Stein free-kick had hit Carlo Monti on the hand.

Despite protests by Ton captain Stewart Greacen, the spot-kick was awarded and McQuade tucked it past Bryn Halliwell.

Davie Irons' men looked shaken by the goal but got their act together in the second half when Masterton scored his second.

Masterton's crisp corner found Weatherson lurking at the front post and he directed a powerful header past Hay.

Cowdenbeath tried to get back into the match by bringing on John Dempster for McQuade and then Brian Fairbairn for Scott McBride.

Morton brought on comeback man David McGregor for McGuffie and Brian Wake for Allan Jenkins.

Wake then found himself in trouble when he reacted to a challenge by Mark Baxter, resulting in a yellow card for both players.

Joe Mbu was replaced by Dene Drouge for the Blue Brazil and Weatherson made way for Brian Graham. Masterton almost made it 4-1 on the final whistle but missed the target with a long-range effort.
