PORT GLASGOW 1

PORT GLASGOW returned from Denny with a hard-earned point to stay above Dunipace in mid-table in the Central League First Division.

After such a long lay-off it took both clubs some time to get back into a rhythm, with the first real threat at goal coming from a Kevin Struthers shot in 20 minutes. Seconds later, though, it was the home club who took the lead with a near post header from a corner.

The Port drew level on 36 minutes. Frankie McKay, whose probing play had brought a penalty for the Port in their last league match against Thorniewood, was in the thick of the action again. A pass from Jamie Brown split the Dunipace defence and found McKay, who cut in and shot past the home keeper to make it 1-1. There were then further efforts by Ged Hoey and Kevin Struthers, but the teams ended level at the break. Port Glasgow were the dominant force in the second half, and Struthers and Hoey again saw good efforts saved by the Dunipace goalie, one an excellent finger tip round the post.

Substitute Jonathan Donnelly almost got the winner near the end, but his shot went narrowly past the post and the match ended all-square.

Port boss Craig Brown said: "It was a tough game, and I am pleased with the point, as Dunipace away is never an easy game. The effort and commitment of the players was first class, and we are doing well, with seven points out of a possible nine from our last three games."

Port Glasgow: Graham, Temporal, Stanton, Coyle, Hoey, Brown, Wilson, Beckley, Jack, Struthers (Donnelly 70), F. McKay (K. McKay 81) Subs not used: Molloy, Kidd.

Port Glasgow Juniors are sponsored by 5 Star Plasterers, and WJ.
