GREENOCK boxer John Simpson says he is ready to cause an upset tomorrow night — despite facing an opponent who is two weight divisions bigger.

John, 30, will face tough Englishman John Murray, 29, on the Ricky Burns undercard in front of 10,000 fans at a sold-out SECC tomorrow night.

He is again moving up to lightweight despite losing to Tommy Coyle in November.

But the Greenock battler says he is sharp, fully fit and punching well ahead of the showdown.

John said: “He will be coming to take my head off because he’s two weights bigger than me and stronger.

“But I’m raring to go. I have a good chance and know I can win. John’s not really fought in two years and he was stopped in his last two fights before one in November.” “He’ll be rusty. I’ll need to take advantage of that.” Tomorrow’s bout is another last-minute fight after John was called in at short notice by promoters before Murray stepped in to replace original opponent Anthony Crolla, who pulled out through injury two weeks ago.

But John says he is used to late changes and also confirmed this will be his last fight at lightweight even if he does win.

He said: “I’ve not had much time to prepare for this fight but I’m not complaining about it.

“I’m not a proper lightweight. After this I’ll keep training and go down to featherweight or super featherweight — even if I beat John Murray.

“I want to give it one last push because I haven’t got a lot of time left.” But for now the Greenock man has one target — stopping John Murray in front of a full house spurring him on. He added: “Hopefully I can catch him on an off night.

“It’s a 10,000 sell-out so I’ll have Scottish fans shouting and bawling at me — that’s in my favour and will be superb.

“I’m confident — you have to be — but I know the best John Simpson will beat the best John Murray.” John would like to thank his sponsors, Dunn’s MOT Testing and Phil Paul of Clyde Injury Clinic and would like to thank strengthening coach Andy Armour of Armour Training.
