GREENOCK golfer Chris Doak is in first round action at the Scottish Open today hoping to emulate his flying start 12 months ago.
The 36-year-old teed off at Royal Aberdeen golf course at 11am a year on from storming to the top of the leaderboard with back-to-back scores of 66 in the opening two rounds.
But two scores of 73 on Saturday and Sunday saw him finish in 12th place as American Phil Mickelson lifted the trophy at Castle Stuart in Inverness.
Doak is in a group with Englishman Eddie Pepperell, a one-time European Tour event winner, and 2013 Scottish amateur champion Alexander Culverwell.
No Scot has won the Scottish Open title since Colin Montgomerie won in 1999.
Greenock man Doak will be hoping to repeat his strong start of 12 months ago and finish higher up the leaderboard.
But he faces a tough challenge, with this year’s tournament boasting one of the biggest and best line-ups in the tournament’s history.
The field is full of big-names and major winners, including Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Paul Lawrie and Sir Nick Faldo.
