A DELEGATION from Whinhill Golf Club recently presented a cheque of £1,000 for the Provost’s Fund after the successful Jimmy Lang memorial charity gents’ greensome open competition.

The tournament is named after Whinhill Golf Club’s greatest-ever member Jimmy Lang and this year’s competition was the 31st year the event has been held.

During the past 30 years, tens of thousands of pounds have been raised during the playing of the competition, with money raised being donated to the Provost’s Fund to distribute out to needy causes in the Inverclyde area.

Unfortunately this year was the seventh Jimmy Lang Memorial competition after Jimmy’s death in 2007 at the age of 86.

Most of those 86 years were spent providing sporting activities for others in the Inverclyde area.

He served the local football community for over 25 years before serving the local golfing community as match secretary of Whinhill Golf Club from 1970 right up until his death in 2007.

In his role as match secretary of Whinhill Golf Club, Jimmy was instrumental in the creation and running of many inter-club competitions, leagues and events.

Jimmy’s popularity amongst golfers in the Inverclyde area once again ensured a strong turn-out.

The competition was won by the team of Paul MacDonald and Stephen Wright, both members of Whinhill Golf Club.

The club would like to thank everyone who took part in the competition and the following sponsors: Beith Golf Club, B M Hughes Builders, Black Cat, Landscapes & Contracts, Largs Golf Club, McNellis & McLaughlan, PB Wright & Sons, PDC Copyprint (Greenock), Tamburini & Shields, Mr. E. Blaikie, Mr. I. Blaikie, Mr. A. Bruce, Mr. S. Burden, Mr. C. Dow, Mr. S. Duddy, Mr. J. Ferguson, Mr. D. McKenna, Mr. T. McShand, Mr. J. Murdoch, Mr. N. Rodger, Mr. M. Ross and Mr. D. Siddons.
