THE finals and presentation of prizes for the Greenock and District Bowling Association Championships were held recently at Gourock Park Bowling Club greens.

President Robert Harron of the association is also president of Gourock Park and as the club is one of the few greens in Inverclyde that can accommodate 12 games at the same time with it being a two-green club, both semi-finals and finals were held there.

It was obviously a very busy day and everything went according to plan except the weather which played up for about 10 minutes.

Nevertheless, the piper from 2nd Gourock Boys’ Brigade led the players onto the green for the start of the matches.

Despite the conditions, the games went ahead and players from Ardgowan Club (pairs), Gourock (pairs), Gourock Park (senior fours, junior singles), Grosvenor (fours, triples,) Lady Alice (junior singles, singles), Port Glasgow (senior fours, triples) and Victoria (fours, singles) were able to do their best on the green.

The results at the end of the afternoon of the senior fours game, which was sponsored by Kilmacolm Bowling Club, was a win for Gourock Park over Port Glasgow by 19 shots to 11.

The fours, which is sponsored by Gourock BC, was won by 17 shots to nine for Victoria over Grosvenor.

In the triples, sponsored by Victoria BC, saw a win for Grosvenor over Port Glasgow by 17 shots to 13.

The pairs championship game is sponsored by Lady Alice BC and the match saw the largest difference in scores for the afternoon when Ardgowan beat Gourock by 23 shots to 12.

In the junior singles championship game, which was sponsored by Mr T Ferdinand and family, two of the best juniors in the district played each other.

They are Michael Stevenson Junior, of Gourock Park, who faced Lady Alice’s Mark Boyle.

It was a win for Michael over Mark by 21 shots to 10. There is no doubt that these two names will figure in the championships in the future and they are a credit to their clubs.

The singles championship of the association, sponsored by Grosvenor BC, was between Peter Boyle of Lady Alice and George Buchan of Victoria.

This was an excellent game to watch and the result was a win for George by 21 shots to 13 over Peter.
