GIRLS from Clyde Netball Club’s u17s and u15s perfromed strongly in two recent competitions in Glasgow.

Both teams took part in events run by Glasgow Netball Association and held at Easterhouse Sports on separate days.

First up were the Under 17s, supported by Ellis Little and Savanah Antonio from Under 15s.

This was the first time this group have competed this season and although this is a small squad, they work hard together and have a great team spirit.

First to play were Cazdow and Clyde started strong and took them by surprise, and although the opposition fought back in the second half, Clyde were comfortable 13-5 winners.

Next up were Saltires, who featured a six foot tall goal shooter, but this did not deter Clyde as Megan Ruddy dealt with her height, intercepting on numerous occasions. Clyde dominated this game, winning 10-4.

This good form continued in the next match, an 11-2 victory over St. Peter’s.

Bellahouston proved tougher opponents. This game did not disappoint and went end to end, goal for goal, right down to the final whistle.

The players were unsure who had won, and the Clyde girls were delighted to discover they had edged it 10-9.

Paisley were Clyde’s next opponents and the team started strong, taking Paisley by surprise to go in at 7 -1 up at half-time.

Paisley came back stronger in the second half, but could not overturn the 15-8 result.

The final game of the day turned out to be akin to a final, as both Clyde and top junior side Broomhill were undefeated. Both sides started even with the ball swinging from end to end. Broomhill were one point ahead at half-time and proved to be the stronger side, with a 13 – 7 win, putting Clyde in second position.

Clyde had a great performance – Jennifer Robertson and Robyn Findlay in the shooting circle, Megan Ruddy and Savanah Antonio in the defensive circle and the mid-court being run by the ever dominant Emma Mitchell, supported by Ellis Little, Emma Smith and Corine Shaw.

Two weeks later the Under 15s were in action. Due to other commitments this squad was depleted so under 13 player Lucy McFarlene stepped up to help out and did not disappoint.

She played excellently and was admired by her fellow players, which was reflected in the players’ votes she received over the whole day of play.

First, Clyde played Broomhill 3 and showed great determination from the start, playing well in all areas of the court to win 13-2.

Cumbernauld were next and were easily beaten 14-2 by the girls.

Bellahouston made it much tougher for Clyde who managed to scrape a 6 – 5 win and the team then went on to trounce Maryhill 9 – 0 win before a 7-1 victory over Saltires.

Clyde’s remaining three games were tougher. The team found it difficult to adjust against St Peter’s aggressive style of play and their opponents ran away with the first half. A half-time team talk and change of tactics saw them curb St Peter’s in the second, but it was too little too late, with a 6 -11 defeat.

Clyde managed a 4-4 draw in their next game against Broomhill 2.

The girls’ final game was against Broomhill 1. The squad started strongly and did not let Broomhill’s recent form affect their play, but they could not find another victory and were beaten 4-7.

St Peter’s came first with Broomhill second and Clyde taking third place in the tournament, with only four points separating these three teams.

Clyde’s squad: Ellis Little, Savanah Antonio, Nadelle Little, Kara McKay, Alanna Buchan, Lucy McFarlene, Jenna Gisbey and Lucy McDade.
