JIM Duffy says he’s delighted with his team after another victory at Cappielow on Saturday — but insists he won’t get carried away with his players’ outstanding form.

Morton dispatched Raith Rovers at the weekend with a strong 2-0 win over the Kirkcaldy outfit.

The victory keeps Ton in third place in the Ladbrokes Championship, three points ahead of closest challengers Falkirk with a game in hand.

Second-placed Dundee United are also within reach, just five points in front of Morton, again with the Greenock men having a game in hand over the Tangerines.

But Duffy claims he isn’t interested in promotion chat just yet — because there’s still plenty of football to be played between now and the end of the campaign.

He said: “This win keeps us up there, and in a highly competitive division the players have been outstanding.

“They deserve an awful lot of credit.

“But it is only January, mid-January, and there’s an awful long way to go.

As cliché as it sounds, we will just keep working hard and keep the points accumulating — and see where it takes us.”

He added: “It was a good win and I thought we played well. It was a tough match and once again I think defensively, we were outstanding.

“We were really resolute and that gave us the platform to take advantage of the chances that came our way. There might not have been too many clear goal scoring opportunities, but there was one really good save in particular from Gats [Derek Gaston] towards the end of the game from Mark Stewart.

“Other than that I think we protected the goal really well, and up front I think we were always a threat.”

The Ton boss praised new boy Lawrence Shankland for his contribution to the game, including his goal — perhaps the easiest he’ll score all season after left-back Mark Russell put the ball on a plate for the forward.

And the gaffer hopes it’s the start of a prolific loan spell for the 21-year-old.

He said: “It’s always good for the player himself and obviously for the manager as well. It’s good for Shanks, he’s came in — everyone knows the kind of player he is.

“He’s the type of player who thrives in the penalty box and the type of goal he scored was one of those ones where he finds a bit of space inside a very tight penalty box and nods it into the net.

“It was a great run from Mark [Russell] and he’s played a little dinked cross into the box and Shanks is in the right place at the right time.

“Hopefully we are going to be saying that a few times more between now and the end of the season.”
