MICHAEL Doyle has backed Lee Kilday to get back to his best after the Morton captain admitted to feeling under pressure when returning to the defence.

Doyle, right, insists his skipper has no reason to feel out of place at centre-back, because he is an accomplished defender and an influential leader on the pitch.

And while he acknowledges it might take a bit of time for the 23-year-old to get his form back, Doyle sees no reason why Kilday can’t shine once more as a rock at the back.

He told the Tele: “Lee is a fantastic captain. He’ll speak to you, talk you through games as well. He’s not as loud as some other guys but he’s great for the lads in other ways.

“He is not that kind of loud presence that maybe Gavin Gunning was on the park, he’ll have a talk with you quietly. He’s a different kind of player, a cracking player.

“I think we do have three fantastic centre halves in [Ricki] Lamie, Tam O’Ware and Lee Kilday. The club tried to keep Gavin Gunning, because obviously you don’t want to break up a winning team.

“But I think Lee was maybe a wee bit rusty last Saturday.

“I always thought he’d come back in and do well. He was thrown back into a very physical game but I think he’ll grow back into the position, and we’ll get back into being a tight back four.”

Meanwhile, Morton midfielder Andy Murdoch has been named in the SPFL’s team of the week.
