JIM Duffy heaped praise on his side for thrashing Ayr United 4-1 on their own patch — before admitting his troops can play even better.

Duffy watched as his Ton outfit silenced Somerset Park with a brilliant result on Saturday evening, but he is adamant Morton weren’t playing at their best.

However the Ton gaffer insists he was delighted to get the victory over a notoriously stubborn Ayr outfit.

He said: “I’m delighted throughout the 90 minutes in terms of the result.

“We started the game very well, and that was important.

“To come here and win 4-1 is a magnificent result.

“Strangely enough I don’t think the performance was even our best. We started the game well, first 30 minutes in particular.

“But then I think we got a little bit sloppy at times and didn’t take care of the ball. That allowed Ayr to get into the game.

“Thankfully we got a fourth goal in the second half and I thought we saw that half out pretty well.

“When you come to somewhere like Somerset Park, Ayr are a very difficult team to beat. Nobody has really exposed them at all and from the way we started that gave us the platform to win the game.

“Ayr United, in spells, played really, really well. There were a couple of great saves from Gats [Derek Gaston], a couple of magnificent blocks from defenders and last ditch tackling. So it wasn’t quite maybe as easy as the 4-1 scoreline might suggest.”

Duffy also singled out playmaker Ross Forbes for special credit, claiming that the 27-year-old is amongst the top performers in the Ladbrokes Championship.

Forbes brought his goalscoring tally for the season to double figures after another excellent brace and he received man of the match from BBC Alba, who broadcast the game live.

He said: “Ross [Forbes] has been magnificent for us, really, since he’s came to the club. There’s no other way to describe it.

“But this year he’s taken it to a whole different level. Against top class players in this division, Ross is up there amongst them.

“His general performances, goals, assists and delivery. But also just his composure on the ball makes him a top class player.

“He’s playing at the top of his game right now.”
