IN-form Morton midfield maestro Ross Forbes has dampened down the promotion talk surrounding the Cappielow club.

Ton moved to within three points of second place in the Championship on Saturday night thanks to a crushing 4-1 defeat of Ayr — and they still have a game in hand over rivals Dundee United.

The victory means they have gone eight matches unbeaten in all competitions and have picked up nine wins and four draws in their last 14 games.

Although many pundits are now tipping them for play-off success, key man Forbes insists the Greenock men must ignore the hype and maintain their current form.

He believes the men from Tannadice will still be considered favourites to finish above his side and that it’s up to Morton to defy the odds.

Forbes said: “You’re always going to favour the so-called bigger clubs for the top spots if you’re tipping them.

“But we’ll keep going about our business the way we have, keep working hard and hopefully it takes us to a nice position come the end of the season.

“[A play-off position] would be great, but it seems a million miles away just now.

“There’s still a lot to play and even if you get to the play-offs at the end, there are a lot of games in those. But you never know, it’s just your luck.

“We’ll keep on working hard and see where it takes us.”

Forbes netted his ninth and 10th goals of the campaign on Saturday, with his first a wonderful curled effort from just outside the box.

But the former Motherwell and Partick man says he’s more interested in how important his goals are for the team, rather than grabbing any personal glory.

He said: “It’s always nice to get goals, but three points were the main thing and it’s important to keep our run going.

“My first was a good goal but it is always nice to score any type of goal.

“It’s always especially nice to score from outside the box because that makes it seem better.

“Long may it continue but as long as we get the win in the end.”

Ton faced monsoon-like conditions during parts of Saturday’s game but they got to grips with the weather to leave their hosts all at sea and Forbes, 27, praised his team-mates for the way they coped with the elements.

He said: “The park was a bit heavy to start with and we had that downpour in the first half which doesn’t really help. But I thought the boys did really well and dealt with the conditions.”
