KUDUS Oyenuga insists he’s ‘chomping at the bit’ to return to action for Morton — but admits he won’t be rushing himself back for fear of his hamstring injury recurring a third time.

Oyenuga has been sidelined for nearly four weeks after going off injured 10 minutes into Ton’s 2-1 victory over Dumbarton at the beginning of January.

Before that, he had picked up a similar hamstring problem in December’s Cappielow clash with Hibernian.

So it’s no surprise that while he’s desperate to return to the fold to try and help Ton push for the play-offs, he won’t risk coming back too soon.

He told the Tele: “I’m back in training now, taking it day after day. It’s looking better than it did before, but it’s been four weeks on Saturday that I’ve been out, so hopefully I can see how I react in training this week and maybe even get a reserve team game in.

“Watching the boys play and do so well, you always want to be involved and be part of the team. So I’m chomping at the bit to get back.

“I don’t want to rush things because I’ve broken down twice in my hamstring, so I don’t want to come back and then set myself back
further.

“I know it’s going to be a long remainder of the season, we’ve still got 16 or 18 games — so I’ve got to take my time.”

Oyenuga was pleased to hear manager Jim Duffy say that he can come back from injury and do well for the team.

And after the acquisition of Lawrence Shankland last month, the striker is ready to fight harder for his place when he returns.

He said: “You know how the gaffer is, I’ve got huge respect for him and he’s helped me a lot since I’ve come up here.

“So it’s great to hear him say that he doesn’t feel that he needs another striker to come in because he’s confident that I can come in and contribute.

“Since the start of the season I do feel like I’ve contributed to the team and that I can continue doing so, being a model professional helping the team the best I can.”

Ton under-20s were scheduled to play host to Queen of the South’s development side on Tuesday night, with Oyenuga poised to make his comeback.

But the game was postponed following a pitch inspection and the striker believes it was a blessing in disguise because it allows him to get a few more training sessions under his belt before returning to match action.

He added: “It’s weird because it’s started to rain up here a lot these recent days! But you know how it is sometimes.

“The weather is unpredictable and if the game can’t be on, it can’t be on. But it was disappointing because it was talked about me probably playing that game.

“In hindsight though, it probably is better for me to get another few training sessions under my belt first anyway.”
