JAMIE McDonagh says Morton aren’t looking past Queen of the South this weekend — despite being in the midst of a closely contested battle for a play-off spot.

Ton’s challengers towards the top end of the Ladbrokes Championship table — Falkirk and Dundee United — sit just two and three points in front of the Greenock men respectively, but McDonagh insists his side aren’t paying much attention to the league table and are, instead, paying full attention to the Doonhamers’ visit on Saturday.

He told the Tele: “It’s a very big game because it’s very tight at the top end of the table now and it’s getting tighter as the games go on.

“Teams are dropping points all over the place.

“But we need to try and maintain our form and try to get as many points as we can.

“Obviously it’s going to be a very tough task as every game is, but we hope to get three points on the table, keep pushing for promotion and get the play-offs.

“I don’t think chasing Falkirk comes into it. We’ve now got two games in hand over them so we need to try and win those two games and then we know where we stand.

“Every game we try and get three points to see where it takes us.

“That’s what it’s all about. We don’t want to look too far forward or too much into the table. We’ll just see where we end up.

“When we beat them 5-0 [in October], they were doing really well at the top of the league at that point. So it shows that once you go on a run of games you can do really well, but once you lose one or two, people start to worry.

“But games are competitive and Cappielow is a tough place to come for teams, especially the way we’ve been going at home.

“It’ll be a tough game and we want to carry on our run.”

McDonagh was recovering from a sickness bug and was bed bound during a visit home to see his family last week.

But he says he still enjoyed the visit back home — and he should be back fit and ready to face Queens on Saturday.

He said: “I was home [last week] but was sick all week and bed bound all weekend. But I got to see the family and my wee baby Layton, so it was good.

“It’s always nice to get home and see the family, my wee baby is over back home as well and it’s his birthday next week so I was spoiling him a wee bit.

“It was the end of last week I caught the bug and had a few days off training. I came back Sunday, took it easy in training on Monday and then was back training [on Wednesday] and did a few extra runs and a session.

“So I’m feeling better now and should be fine by the weekend.”
