AIDAN Nesbitt firmly believes Morton can go all the way to the Ladbrokes Premiership after they sealed a play-off spot against Ayr United on Saturday afternoon.

Ton were held at Cappielow by the basement boys in a 1-1 draw, but the point was enough to guarantee a top four place in the Championship for Nesbitt’s side.

And the on-loan Celtic ace insists the Greenock men can thrive under the pressure of the play-offs.

Asked if Ton can go up this season, Nesbitt replied: “Yes, of course. We’re a football team, playing against 11 other players. We’ve played all the other teams before, so there’s nothing to stop us.

“You thrive on big games like play-offs. Obviously earlier this season we got beat at Ibrox but that was one of our best performances.

“Everyone worked hard and we did well by getting to the semi-final of the League Cup. That was because everybody in the big games were performing.

“We all know there’s pressure but you need to thrive off it and do everything you can to go and win the games.

“So we’re all delighted, if at the start of the season you had offered us a play-off place with two games to go we would’ve taken the arm off you.”

Nesbitt reckons the Sinclair Street side have earned the right to contest the play-offs after a hugely impressive campaign.

But he acknowledges that they have gone off the boil a bit in the last few months. Without a win in seven, Saturday’s result was another disappointing stalemate.

But the winger says he was pleased with the performance in the first half as the Greenock men looked dangerous up front - an aspect that has been lacking from recent performances.

He said: “I thought against Ayr we were really good in the first half and it was the last kick of the ball that done us there. It was a bit nervy in the second half but we can all regroup now and concentrate on it, and can go and try to impress.

“But we were brilliant in the first half. Other than the last kick of the ball we were very penetrative, there were a lot of good balls in behind.

“We missed a few chances but compared to the last few weeks, it was good to actually get those chances. We’ve not really been creating them recently.

“In the end we’ve got the point and secured the play-offs so we’re all delighted.

“Every single game we play, we try hard and work our socks off. All we need is a wee tiny bit more up at the attacking end of the park, to score a few more goals and I’m sure we can do well.”

With the play-offs looming, Ton need to gain some momentum by sealing victories in their two spare games at the end of the season. And Nesbitt recognises that despite guaranteeing themselves a top four spot, the hard work is only just beginning at Cappielow.

He added: “The hard work doesn’t stop, it starts. We need to go out and play to impress.

“We’ve played all the teams that we’ll be playing in the play-offs four times already this season. And not once have we come away from them having played badly.”
