MORTON are amongst the second seeded teams in this evening’s Betfred Cup group stage draw which will be broadcast live on BT Sport.

Ton made it all the way to the semi-final at Hampden last season when they were left heartbroken following a 2-0 defeat by Aberdeen

And the Greenock men will have the opportunity to do it all again when the competition kicks off next month.

Jim Duffy’s side make up one of the four second seeded teams in the south section of the draw, which also includes Queen of the South, Dumbarton and Renfrewshire rivals St Mirren

This rules out an early derby match as teams from the same pot cannot be drawn against one another in one of the eight groups of five teams.

Forty teams go into the first-round draw, including Lowland League champions East Kilbride and Highland League winners Buckie Thistle. The eight group winners, plus four best runners-up, will be joined by European qualifiers Celtic, Aberdeen, Rangers and St Johnstone in the second round.

First round group fixtures will be played across five match dates — July 15, 19, 22, 26 and 29 — subject to broadcast selections. The draw will take place tonight on BT Sport 2 at 6.30pm as well as being streamed live on BT Sport’s Facebook page and Twitter feed. The SPFL’s own social media channels will also be broadcasting the draw live.

The format, announced in advance of last year’s Betfred Cup, sees all drawn group stage matches go straight to a penalty shoot-out — with the winners earning an extra bonus point.
