MICHAEL Doyle already has a reputation as a Morton fans’ favourite, but the right-back took his affinity with supporters to a whole new level on Saturday — after he and team-mate Gary Oliver pulled over on the motorway when a supporters’ bus broke down.

The pair — along with Doyle’s dad — were driving home from Ton’s 1-0 Betfred Cup victory over Berwick Rangers when they noticed the bus-load of Ton fans stranded whilst making their own way back from the Borders.

While the two players were unqualified to fix the damaged radiator, Doyle hopes he and Oliver, inset, were at least able to bring a smile to the supporters’ faces during what could have been a frustrating wait.

He told the Tele: “My dad took me to the game on Saturday, as he’s been doing since I was a young boy, and we’ve had our fair share of breakdowns and things like that.

"We were driving past a bus that had broken down, my dad noticed it was Morton fans so we decided to pull over and see if there was anything we could help with.

“It was a radiator that had gone on the bus so there wasn’t much we could do, but we talked with the fans for a while and hopefully brightened them up a wee bit.

“It was good and hopefully they eventually got home!”

Doyle was satisfied with the result and performance from Saturday’s trip to the Wee Gers but admits his side weren’t at their best.

He said: “It was only a 1-0 win but I think we were fully in control of the game.

“We created some more chances and if we had converted them it would’ve been a bigger scoreline, but obviously we’re glad to win and get back to the competitive football.

“Games away to teams like Berwick can be really difficult games because they’ll be up for it and things like that so to come away with a win, we’re happy. There are things we still need to improve on, but as we get up to speed hopefully that’ll click together. A clean sheet away from home is great.

“Sometimes games like that you can play really well and come away with a loss.

"So a win, not playing as well as we know we can, we’ll take that at this stage in the season.”

Morton face Queen’s Park in tonight’s cup clash, the first time Cappielow has seen any action this campaign. And the defender is delighted to be back in with the home support after playing Ton’s last game there back in May against Dundee United in the Premiership promotion play-offs first-leg.

He said: “We’ve not had a pre-season game at home even, so it’ll be good to get back to our home fans. I know the new signings are raring to go to get their first game at Cappielow, and I’m looking forward to getting back in with the Morton fans.

“You’re talking almost two months since we’ve played at Cappielow. The boys haven’t even had a chance to go up and get a bit of training done even because of the work that’s been getting done.

“So we’re looking forward to getting back to the home fans and we want to build on Saturday’s result.”

MORTON have updated the stadium entry arrangements for tonight’s game against Queen’s Park.

Fans intending to sit in the main stand should buy a ticket at the new ticket office, which will be open from 5.30pm, on Sinclair Street.

These tickets will have a scannable bar code which will operate the electronic turnstiles.

Fans using the terrace should use the cash turnstiles at the Wee Dublin End, which will allow access to the Cowshed and the Sinclair Street terraces.

Fans have been asked, where possible, that they have the correct change available and turn up as early as possible to assist with speedy entry to the ground. After the match, fans will exit as normal via the main gates onto Sinclair Street.
