MARK Russell says he is desperate to help his side to a victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle — to avenge the heavy defeat they suffered last time the two sides met four years ago.

Russell was in his debut season with Morton having played just three games prior to the 4-0 Scottish Cup defeat at the Caledonian Stadium as a 17-year-old.

Now 21, Russell is one of just three players at Ton who are still around, including Thomas O’Ware and then-sub keeper Derek Gaston

The young left-back is determined to show that the Greenock men have improved since then — and he’s sure there won’t be a repeat.

He told the Tele: “I’ve actually played there before, I made my first start for Morton against Inverness.

“I don’t remember much about that day, I was only 17 at the time. We lost 4-0 but it was a good experience as a youngster.

“Hopefully we can bury the result from that night. I’m looking forward to going back and hopeful that we can come away with a positive result.”

Tuesday night’s 2-0 Irn-Bru Cup loss to Livingston aside, Ton have started the competitive action in confident mood.

And Russell insists they will be looking to take their domestic form to the home of John Robertson’s new-look Caley Jags.

The defender is sure his boss will change his side from midweek to ensure his men have the best opportunity of winning.

Russell added: “We go into every game confident and we’ll do that on Saturday again.

“I think during the week the gaffer wanted to freshen the team up a bit and make a few changes to give boys a chance who maybe hadn’t had much of a chance before then.

“That’s what we’ve got, competition for places.

“I’m not sure exactly what he’ll do on Saturday but I’d imagine there might be a change or two at least.”
