SCOTT Tiffoney admits it was surreal playing against former Scotland hero James McFadden for Morton Under-20s on Tuesday night.

McFadden signed for Queen of the South earlier this month and has so far made a few appearances for the first team at Palmerston.

But the ex-Motherwell and Everton star lined up for the Doonhamers youngsters as they squared up to Darren Barr’s Ton teens.

Tiffoney says it was strange starring against a player he grew up watching on the TV scoring for Scotland and earning 48 caps for his country.

Tiffoney said: “Queen of the South had a real strong team out on the pitch against us, I’m sure they had four or five first team players out there. They were an experienced side.

“It was really weird playing against the likes of James McFadden because as a kid I’d be watching Scotland and he’d be playing.

“Was he a bit of an idol for me growing up?

“Like a lot of young guys I’ve grown up watching him, so that was strange.

“But when the whistle goes, it leaves your head a wee bit and you just get on with it.”

Of the game itself, McFadden helped himself to four goals as Queens romped back in the latter stages to win 6-4.

Tiffoney was frustrated that his side let a strong lead slip.

He added: “It was a bit of a crazy game. We were 4-1 up and cruising and we’ve went down to 10 men and that has kind of been a game turner.

“But a few of the boys said it shouldn’t have been a penalty or a red card.

“We should’ve seen the game out and been a lot smarter. But the decision has changed the complex of the game.”
