MORTON Under-20s rallied after conceding an early goal against Airdrie to thrash the young Diamonds 5-1 at Ravenscraig Sports Facility yesterday.

First-team fringe player Scott Tiffoney bagged himself a double whilst a brace for Blair Docherty and a Ben Eardley strike completed the rout that leaves Ton’s teens third in the Development League West table after seven fixtures.

Darren Barr’s outfit kicked the game off with two loan stars in their midst. Jamie McGowan and Eardley — both on development loans at Troon and Greenock Juniors respectively — started the action.

McGowan made two vital stops to keep out Cameron Russell before Eardley netted for his side.

Jordan Allan took just four minutes to make an impact for Airdrie as he slotted a finish beyond McGowan for 1-0 before Blair Docherty lobbed in a lovely equaliser from a Tiffoney pass.

Eardley then added a second for Ton before Docherty put Morton on easy street with his second of the afternoon from another Scott Tiffoney assist.

Nineteen-year-old Tiffoney wasn’t to be outdone on the scoring front and slotted home a penalty for Morton before he whizzed in a stunner with 10 minutes left on the clock to complete the hammering of the Diamonds and leave Ton just three points behind league leaders Queen’s Park in the table.

Meanwhile, the Greenock youngsters have been drawn at home against Highland outfit Turriff United in the Scottish Youth Cup. The tie will take place on October 29.
