ROBERT Thomson is making it his mission to regain his starting place in the Morton line-up after being dropped to the bench in recent weeks.

Thomson started the last two fixtures on the sidelines for the Greenock men after having began the season starting the majority of games from kick-off.

But the striker was honest in his assessment of recent performances, admitting there has been a dip in quality.

But the ex-Dumbarton man won’t settle for life out of the starting 11 at Cappielow — even if he has found it easier to make an impact as a substitute than some of his team-mates.

He told the Tele: “It’s frustrating of course being on the bench but I can’t say there wasn’t maybe a wee dip in performances recently.

“I need to get my head down and work towards getting my place back in the team.

“Depending on the type of game it can be difficult making a difference from the bench but you just have to try and make that impact.

“I’ve got a job to do and make the best of every opportunity I have on the pitch and regain my starting position.

“It might be easier for me to make an impact coming off the bench with some of the attributes I have compared to some of the other boys.”

Thomson also reckons he has found it strange to be without a game two weekends in a row but that training in the Morton camp has remained as competitive and hard working as
ever.

He said: “It’s strange to get two weeks without a game during the season, in fact it’s rare just to get one free weekend never mind two.

“But even though there’s no game on Saturday I don’t suppose we could really call it a free weekend as such.

“We’ve obviously got the game on Tuesday coming but it’s a bit different training-wise but there’s still more or less a game to prepare for in midweek.

“There was a game last weekend with the bounce match, and there’s no game this weekend, but we still treat it like a normal week as of Thursday.

“You’ve also got the five days over the course of the week to prepare, so in that way it’s the same. Especially, coming Thursday, it’ll be the same until the Tuesday.

“The way the last game went against Queen of the South it’s more of a factor that we’re maybe a bit more looking forward to the game.”
